24k Magic is the sound of Bruno Mars as a superstar. This means that while the technique is admirable and can’t be denied, his cockyness can be annoying and the lack of heart is notable. This album drips 80s R&B cheese, whether it’s the Janet Jackson-esque Versace On The Floor or the Gap Band parallel title track. However, it replicates its influences too well as the result is an album that goes in one ear and out the other rather quickly. Bruno Mars is known for pulling heavily from retro sources, but unlike before, he doesn’t do much to make them his own here. It’s a fun listen but fleeting.
