Peace and love, gamers and players! It’s been two weeks since the last Gaming Landscape because I took last week off for E3. Therefore, this week will cover TWO WEEKS! I actually ended up not playing a lot of games, at least for two weeks, but I do have a lot to say about them. So with no further adieu, lets get started.
Saints Row: The Third
The main game I played over the past two weeks was the third Saints Row game. I bought it on Steam over a year ago when it was on sale, and then I got it free on PlayStation Plus, and THEN I got it free through Games for Gold. So I actually own every version of this game and hadn’t played much of it. So I popped in the 360 version of the game and got sucked in. I actually finished it too! I also actually wrote a review for the game with my new Sonic head rating system so go check that out for my thoughts on the game. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun.
In the last Gaming Landscape, I talked about how I was playing Max Payne 3 and how I wanted to play the first game again. Well, I did that and this game is a lot harder than I remember it being. The first hour or so is actually pretty frustrating. However, once you get over that hurdle, you understand how the game works more and the game gets easier. Once I started on Saints Row: The Third, I pretty much stopped playing Max Payne. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll come back to the series again in the future.
I got NBA 2k14 for free via PS Plus so I popped it in the Friday before E3 because I was really bored and didn’t know what to do. It’s not for me. Even when I turned off all the rules and attempted to make that game more like NBA Jam, I couldn’t get into it. Simulation basketball games are just not my thing. I pretty much just gave up after two games and I don’t plan on coming back to it anytime soon.
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
I started playing the first Uncharted game again, this time on the harder difficulty in an attempt to get some trophies. The cover system still sucks in that game and the control scheme still feels weird to me. I got to the point where the plane crashes near the beginning and that’s it. Again, Saints Row: The Third took over.
Mario Kart 8
After talking about it for so long, I finally bought Mario Kart 8 this past Wednesday and I love it. I’m really impressed with the design of the tracks and how they use the new antigravity mechanic to include more shortcuts and alternate paths. I was hoping that this game would have a better collection of tracks and it really does. Sure there’s a few duds, like the airport level, but I’m really impressed. That Bowser battleship level is awesome as is the new Rainbow Mode. So far I’ve unlocked all of the characters and completed all the cups in 50cc and 100cc. Saints Row: The Third kind of kept me from playing it more as did the next game.
Saints Row 2
I finished Saints Row: The Third on Friday and immediately wanted to try Saints Row 2. I’ve heard a lot of people say that the second game is actually the best one and I have the game on 360 and PC. So I loaded up the 360 version and…I kind of hate it. Saints Row 2 is a textbook example of everything that’s wrong with open world crime games. A lot of the story missions have you doing either boring stuff or super exciting stuff that you are incapable of doing proficiently. For example, there’s a mission where you need to take over a shipping boat and then hold your ground through three waves of enemies. Between each wave you can run below the decks and get more ammo. However, the game only gives you 10 seconds and the camera doesn’t follow you from behind on default. I’ve never been able to make it. What’s more is you’re given an RPG to shoot down helicopters but they’re not homing so it’s really easy for you to miss and then run out of ammo. What’s worse is they aren’t attacking you. They’re just circling the ship for no reason. This game is chocked full of stupid stuff like this. Add in side stuff that feel like busy work than actual fun and controls that just feel old to me, the only reason I’m still playing this game is the really good story.
Here’s some other games I popped in really quick:
Saints Row: I completed the first Saints Row four years ago and I popped it in real quick to see how it felt compared to the two sequels. It feels really antiquated now but it’s less annoying than 2.
Angry Birds Star Wars 2: I was bored and loaded it up on my Kindle for 15 minutes. It’s Angry Birds alright!
Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition: Went through the game with Oro. Then the Max Payne, Uncharted and Saints Row: The Third happened.
Finally, I didn’t do any videos last week, again because of E3, but the week before, the last of my Lagoon videos with my buddy Terrascene went up.
That was my last two weeks! I won’t be doing anything for E3 2014, as I decided to just enjoy it and take this year off. However, I still want to know what you played these past two weeks. Let me know in the comment section below and be sure to check out my Saints Row: The Third review. Take it easy!
