The final quarter of 2013 is upon us and this is the time when a massive glut of video games are released. Not only are there a lot of games released now but typically the best publishers have to offer is released around this time. Now, while I don’t doubt that games like Watch Dogs and Pokemon X and Y will be great, I’ve noticed a change this year. There’s actually not that many games I want to play this quarter. Off the top of my head is the aforementioned Watch Dogs and Pokemon X and Y, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, but that’s about it. Sure there are games like Beyond: Two Souls, Batman Arkham Origins and Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies that look good but I don’t really feel like I have to run out and get them. Oh and I know about Assassin’s Creed IV, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Ghosts but I just don’t care about those games. They come out annually and I just don’t care anymore.
Then there’s some games that are coming out on next gen consoles. I won’t be getting a PS4, Xbox One or Wii U so those don’t count for me. But that’s a problem too because for me there’s essentially Killzone: Shadow Fall, Killer Instinct (out of sheer morbid curiosity), and Super Mario 3D World, none of which I’m dying to play. There is Sonic Lost World, since I’m a huge Sonic fan, but that’s one game. The point I’m getting at is there’s a distinct lack of awesome titles coming out this Fall. Two years ago, there was so many good games, it was too much! Rayman Origins, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Dark Souls, Batman Arkham City, Saints Row: The Third, Sonic Generations, Uncharted 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it was crazy! Now, there’s around three or four games.
My guess is this is due to the new console coming out. They must be stockpiling or taking extra time to work on their upcoming games, which I’m fine with. I’m even okay with not having that many new games to play this fall as I can whittle down my vast backlog of games. However, I do miss that feeling of all of these great games coming out and getting excited at all the fun I could have. How do you feel though? Do you think this fall lineup of games is weak compared to recent years?
