I’m going to skip the first half of last week because it was the same as the week before. Little Big Planet, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, The Cave, etc. However on Thursday, I think, I decided to actually play something that was fresh and wasn’t meh on. So I dropped all those other games and decided to pick up my Xbox 360 controller again and finally delve into Red Dead Redemption. It’s been sitting on my shelf for almost a year and aside from trying it out briefly early this year, I haven’t played it.
At first, I didn’t like the aiming. The aiming crosshairs seemed too small to me. But I got used to it and now it actually works quite well to me. I’m currently in Mexico and I’ve done one mission there. I’m actually enjoying the game a lot and although I think the platforming sequences and mobility on foot in close spaces is really stiff, I don’t really have any complaints. As someone who lives in the American Southwest in a desert portion of that area, I can relate to the desolation of the environment as well as the wildlife that freely roam around.
I will say that I think the characters and John Marston himself seemed a bit undefined, like the developers tried to create multifaceted characters but wound up making them unfocused instead. However, this is only a relatively minor complaint because they are still entertaining, fun characters and nothing they do is wildly out of character. Overall, so far I love the game. I don’t know if I’d give it the 9 or 10 out of 10 the game got at release but so far, I’m at a firm 8.5 out of 10 and I can see that going higher as I continue to play the game.
Other than that, I’ve been playing Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on my 3DS, which I got from Gamefly. I’m sort of taking my time but I plan to write a review for Gaming Precision so I won’t take up too much time. There’s not much to say other than it’s plays like a lot like the older games and it controls a lot better than the Wii version. I rented the Wii one a couple of years ago and hated that I had to shake the remote to roll. It broke the game for me and I didn’t want to hack the game like some were doing. So far I haven’t run into any problems that reviewers have so I’m enjoying it. Man is it a tough game to get any of the extra stuff. The time attack stuff especially is brutal. Getting gold is near impossible for me.
That’s basically what I’ve been playing this past week. Some quick plugs: I’ll be posting new Colorwind Beats Batman Arkham Asylum videos this week as well as a Colorwind Plays of World Heroes on the SNES. Also, if time allows it, I’ll be posting my first video review this Friday. It’s a test video really, so I’ll be reviewing a game I know oh so well, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 aka the first game I ever played. So check out my YouTube channel for that. Finally, my latest editorial for the site I write for, Gaming Precision, went up today. It talks about Nintendo and whether its third party problem will finally do the company in. I think that’s everything. So what have you been playing this past week?
