So I got tired of only playing games for work and started playing whatever I wanted. So I’ve got several titles to talk about. First up is Sly Cooper and the Thievious Raccoonus. I got The Sly Collection back when it was on sale about a month ago and I haven’t really touched it. However, after reviewing Thieves in Time a few weeks ago, I’ve been wanting to return to the previous Sly games.
So I started playing the first game again and I’ve noticed three things:
- The first Sly game is really just a platformer rather than the open world stealth platformer that the series became to be.
- I hate doing the time trials for each stage.
- The first game doesn’t really hold up that well.
Now I’ve sort of been aware of these three things before but now they just seem more apparent. That’s not to say that I’m not enjoying the game but it does need to be said that the first Sly game is not the best. As a result, I actually started playing Sly 2 at the same time and it whetted my thirst for the open world stealth platforming Sly Cooper is known for. I finished the first area and started the second but I’m going to focus on the first game now and go in order. I’ve had my fix so I’m good now. Sly 2 is still the best in the series, IMO.
I also started Ratchet & Clank. Rather, I picked up from where I left off. Again, I got the game as a part of the sale on the PSN from a month ago. However, I’m not a big Ratchet & Clank fan. It was only about a year ago that I played this game on the PS2 and actually finished it. See, I find the atmosphere and pacing of the game to be terrible. Most of the game feels like you running around and doing things just because its there and it doesn’t move the story forward or reward you with some tangible reward that makes logical sense to the current situation.
Maybe that sounds like I’m thinking too hard about it and you’re probably right but the game doesn’t do anything to distract me from coming up with that conclusion. Now I do like the game for what it is and that’s mostly due to the weapons which are varied and pretty cool. I’ve heard the second and third games are better. I started playing Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando about a year ago but didn’t finish it and I have it as part of the sale. I remember liking it a bit more so maybe after I’m done with the first game again.
I picked up my 3DS after ignoring it for a few weeks and I’m going through Super Mario 3D Land. It’s another Mario game. Nothing more, nothing less. I will say that the level design is a little more inspired that it has been in recent Mario games but other than that, it’s Mario again. Not much to say about it.
I didn’t play as much of Injustice: Gods Among Us as I wanted to this week but I did try out and go through Battles mode with Green Arrow. I don’t really care for him but I can see how some people might like him. I also tried out Batgirl since I got the season pass. I really dig how she controls and I’m going to work on getting good with her. She’s very combo heavy and quick as well as having several deceptive attacks where she teleports or attacks while moving backwards.
I’m still playing Ni No Kuni for review and it’s taking me forever. One problem is although I enjoy the game while I’m playing it, it’s not leaving an impression on me and I find myself not being in the mood to sit down and play it. It’s something I’ll have to mention in the review. Maybe things will pick up now that I have another member in my party now.
Finally, since Ni No Kuni is taking so long, I decided to find another game to play for review that’s shorter so I can get the review out quick as well as relieve some pressure from Ni No Kuni so I can play it at my pace and enjoy it. So I started playing Dust: An Elysian Tale, which was just released on PC. I haven’t played much but I will say that it is a gorgeous game on the PC. I played the demo on the 360 before and enjoyed that but now, I’ll be playing the full game. I hope it’s good! It looks good, anyway…
Alright, that is what I’ve been playing this week. Now I want to hear from you. Leave your response in the comments below and tell me: What have you been playing this past week?
