Only three days ago, the Xbox turned 10. Now, it’s the Gamecube’s turn. I’ll be honest. I’m not a big fan of the lunch pail. However, the console did have game I enjoyed including probably my favorite multiplayer game ever. Read on and see what I consider to be the top of the Gamecube heap.
3. Super Smash Bros. Melee
Nintendo really knocked it out of the park with this game. Competitive gaming never felt so cool! Getting four players in one match is such an amazing experience and it doesn’t take long for things to get CRAZY! Samus vs. Fox vs. Ness vs. Pikachu is always an epic fight between my friends and I, although Ness usually wins (read: my friend David). There’s also many different challenges and modes to keep you busy if you want to go it alone. Super Smash Bros. Melee is the best one in the series. The only thing this iteration in the series lacks is Sonic the Hedgehog.
2. Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Me and my friends still play this game to this day. It was better than Mario Kart 64 and Mario Kart Wii never reached the level of awesomeness this iteration gave us. I already showered this game with praise so I’ll keep this brief. Mario Kart: Double Dash!! is crack on a disk. You put it into your Gamecube (or Wii), turn on the power and you are automatically hooked. From the moment you start your first race to the moment you finally put the controller down due to fatigue, sleep deprivation and hunger, this is such an engrossing game for single players and multiplayers alike. This is why the game has held its value. That and Baby Park, the friggin’ Snowball of the game.
1. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
This game, like all of the best games of all time, is fun. Above all else, this game is so much fun. The thrill of going through the different environments and completing the different bosses, learning about the interesting characters and progressing the stories is endless. Also, unlike many games, I find this game to be so cute. It makes me happy. It’s not that I’m happy when I complete something in the game. I just start this game up and I automatically smile. I see this world and I’m filled with delight. How many games can you say makes you happy by just the sight of it, by just existing? Add to it that the game is a long, and enjoyable game, a great battle system that is quite unique in the RPG world, and you have my favorite game on the Gamecube.
