The Legend of Zelda
A video montage of Zelda opens the conference. It featured some scenes from the new Skyward Sword game and ended with The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary emblem. Shigeru Miyamoto then came onstage and instructed the orchestra to play different Zelda music. He then restated that Link’s Awakening will come out today on the DS store, and Ocarina of Time 3D coming out this weekend. He also announced that next week, Four Swords will come out as a free download. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, a gold Wii controller will be sold when Skyward Sword comes out. Also, a symphonic orchestra concert tour will be happening in the fall and will play Zelda music, along with soundtrack CDs for Ocarina of Time 3D and the aforementioned concert. Honestly, I expected more. Nothing new was announced and the music stuff is fine but not E3 announcement worthy.
He made a speech about their success with the Wii and DS. He mentioned their new consoles but didn’t say much. He then introduced a video showing pre rendered clips of Mario Kart, Star Fox, Mario Bros, Kid Icarus, and Luigi’s Mansion.
Mario Kart 3DS
Reggie starts pushing the 3DS version of Mario Kart and showed a video of supposed gameplay. You will now pick different cars and tires. You will also race underwater. It’ll be released this holiday season. I love Mario Kart and so does everyone else. You’ll buy it, I’ll buy it. Moving on.
Star Fox 64 3D
Star Fox is being released in September. Cool. Star Fox 64 is an awesome game!
Super Mario 3DS
A video was shown displaying gameplay. It’s a 3D platformer and has the visual style of Mario Galaxy but gameplay like New Super Mario Bros. It’ll be out this year. Yay!
Kid Icarus Uprising
A video was shown. It looks cool and action packed. It looks like a third person shooter with a cartoony look and fantasy-esque vibe. It’ll also use the Augmented Reality feature of the 3DS. It’ll have 3 on 3 multiplayer. It comes out this year. Looks cool. Something to check out.
Luigi’s Mansion 2
A new game for the 3DS, it resembles the original in everyway. You’re still catching ghosts with a vacuum and walking around with a flashlight. It’ll have multiple mansions. I didn’t like the first one so I don’t care about this one.
Mario and Sonic at the London Olympics, Ace Combat 3D, Tetris, Resident Evil Mercenaries, Cave Story 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, Driver Renegade, Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions, Tekken 3D, and Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D were shown in a quick video showcasing third party support. Hit and Miss, moving on. Next was the Nintendo Store. 3D trailers will be available and game demos as well. Excitebike will be in 3D and will be free to download. The Pokedex from the Pokemon games will be on the 3DS and will be in 3D. You collect Pokemon by Street Pass or special cards that are scanned.
It looks like a tablet. This is the controller that they showed but this is the new “system”. It’ll just be a expansion of the Wii line. You can play games from the console on the screen only and will add new functionality. It has a 6.2 touch screen that requires a stylist. It also will have Video Chat. All the Wii controllers will be compatible. It has two analog sticks, a d-pad, a microphone, speakers, accelerometer, a camera, four face buttons, and shoulder buttons. It’s not a portable system. You can play games without the TV or in conjuncture with the TV. It comes out in 2012. Honestly, I want to punch Nintendo in the face right now. This is just another line in the Wii series. Sure it’s a new system but it still has a casual slant. The system will be in HD, at least. A Smash Bros will come out for 3DS and Wii U and will work together. Great. Still mad about Wii U. Lego City Stories will come out for the Wii U and 3DS. It’s like Lego GTA. A video then played showing what developers think of the console and announced hardcore games for the system like Darksiders 2, Dirt, Assassin’s Creed, Ghost Recon, Tekken, and Ninja Gaiden 3. That was pretty cool. Nintendo is aiming for the hardcore in this respect but they won’t let go of the casual audience and that controller is just stupid.
John Riccitiello came onstage and talked about their partnership with Nintendo and the possibilities with the new console. That’s it.
Reggie Fils-Amie then thanked the audience for watching and promoted the Nintendo Network for E3 coverage. Nintendo’s conference was okay but the announcement for the Wii U controller just pissed me off. It put a damper on the whole conference and although I know that it could be great because it has all these games, Nintendo clearly hasn’t learned it’s lesson and the controller is going to be a problem again for these hardcore games. It just doesn’t look comfortable. The standout was Kid Icarus: Uprising.
